Toxic to pets

Every part of bleeding heart contains alkaloids that are poisonous if eaten, with the roots and fleshy stems the strongest, and repeated handling can irritate skin. Keep children from picking it, wear gloves when dividing it, and get medical advice if a person has swallowed any. Cats and dogs that chew it get trembling, staggering, vomiting, diarrhoea and laboured breathing, so contact a vet if a pet has been digging it up.
