Organic mulches
Wear gloves and wash your hands after handling manure, compost or leaf mould. Open bags of compost at arm's length in a well-aired spot, as they can contain Legionella bacteria that are harmful if breathed in.

Compost, well-rotted manure, leaf mould and bark feed the soil as they break down.
Notes
Top up each year. Home-made compost, bought soil improver or a bulky organic manure all do the job.
