Checking
Tree and shrub stakes and ties
A tie left tight will strangle the growing stem and can girdle and kill the tree. A stake left too long stops the trunk flexing and building its own strength.
When
Twice a year, in autumn and spring, and again after gales, through the first two or three growing seasons.
How
1) Check the tie is not cutting into or rubbing the bark. 2) Loosen the tie as the stem thickens so it never bites in. 3) Check the stake is firm and not rocking, and that the stem is not chafing against it. 4) Check a spacer is holding the stem clear of the stake. 5) Remove the stake once the tree stands on its own, usually after two to three years.
Notes
Keep stakes low so the crown can move and thicken the base of the trunk, which is what you want. A stake driven in on the side the prevailing wind blows from gives the best hold.
