Match the plant to the light: bright for cacti and succulents, bright but indirect for most foliage, low light only for the tough few.
Notes
An east or north window suits most foliage plants; cacti and succulents want the brightest spot with some direct sun (south or west), and variegated plants need more light to hold their markings.
