A clipped hedge and the same plant grown free share the same leaf and the same flower and differ only in whether a gardener clips them, so one picture serves both. The browse and pick screen exists to identify the plant; choosing hedge or tree afterwards is a tap, not a picture. This also removes a slot the free sources could never fill, because nobody photographs their box edging and submits it for species verification. Picture that was on this row, kept for the record: https://content.eol.org/data/media/59/26/6a/509.fd99ffb8fbde3933e3740e8109c05f98.jpg | Species shown: Cotoneaster lacteus. Photo: A. Barra, CC BY 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons via EOL. Original item: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cotoneaster_lacteus.jpg. Shape evidence: description 'Cotoneaster lacteus. Real Jardin Botanico, Madrid. Date: November 2005', a botanic garden planting, so a cultivated shrub. Nothing in the item says it is clipped or grown as a hedge.. Was blank in v9.34 because GBIF had nothing usable; found through Encyclopedia of Life in v9.35. |

| PG-1 (see Working Papers). | DEAD LINK, HTTP 403, confirmed 24 August 2026. The image no longer resolves and this row needs a replacement picture. URL that failed: https://www.artsobservasjoner.no/MediaLibrary/plants/2013/large/380424.jpg | STAGE CHECK, v9.42. New rule: a crop must be shown at the stage it is grown to, not at the stage that makes it identifiable to a botanist. Wild carrot in flower is a correct photograph of Daucus carota and useless, because carrots are pulled a year before they flower. Confirmed failures of this kind: carrot in flower, radish flowering with no root in shot, leek shown as wild leek in flower. This picture has not been checked against the rule. | WINTER SUSPECT, v9.42. Ten of ten winter pictures inspected on 24 August 2026 were in full leaf, fruit or blossom, including a shrub covered in white flower and a Blackthorn dated 2 December showing sloes on a twig. The month filter worked perfectly. The cause is definitional: research grade on iNaturalist means two people agreed on the species, and you cannot identify a deciduous plant from a bare silhouette, so the winter records that reach research grade are exactly the ones with enough leaf, fruit or bud left to identify. Every winter picture in this workbook is suspect until looked at. Do not collect more from GBIF. | Species shown: Prunus domestica subsp. insititia, the damson. Photo: Jan Sørensen, CC BY 4.0, via Artsobservasjoner / GBIF, observation 2404306623 REVIEW: the species is right but the picture may not look like the plant a gardener expects. This is a second photograph from the same occurrence used for the bullace group, because it is the only Prunus domestica subsp. insititia record in GBIF with a licence we can ship. Damson and bullace are the same subspecies, so a reviewer may prefer to leave one of the two groups blank. | WINTER: Photo: CawVus, CC BY-SA, via GBIF, winter observation 5109809536 taken 2024-02-06 taken 2024-02-06. REVIEW: winter record, framing unconfirmed, may be a close-up rather than a whole plant. This is the species Prunus domestica and not the damson subspecies, reached by the widened step of trying another taxon in the genus commonly recorded in Britain, because subsp. insititia has no winter human observation records in GB at all. The bare winter framework of a plum and a damson are close, but a reviewer should be told the substitution was made. | LICENCE VERSION NOT PUBLISHED: the source records this only a |
